Acceptance Commitment Therapy ACT

Thumbnail
ACT combines mainstream therapy with Eastern traditions, including the role of the observer and mindfulness exercises. By focusing on the present moment and living a value driven life, ACT offers a far more accepting way of meeting life's challenges.

Vitality

Remember "vitality" can help you get out of the rut. When you observe the negativity in your life and then practise "mindfulness" to bring yourself back to the present so that you no longer linger in the negativity, vitality can help you move on to a better space. Vitality - doing things that will bring you long term good health and well being. What's in your list of vitality? For more visit http://acttherapy.info/blogs/

Thoughts ....

You got some great news, you are uplifted, you feel great, but out of no where comes some doubt, a fear, something to disrupt the great feeling. What do you do? Get angry, dismiss it, try to change it? What do you do? How often do you become the observer and remind yourself it's only a thought. They will always be there. Observe. Choose vitality.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy - Session 1

Let's start by looking at what generally happens when you go to see a counsellor. Someone goes to see a counsellor when they have a problem that won't go away, or a problem or an issue that is affecting the quality of their life. During your fist visit with the counsellor, the therapist or counsellor will attempt to get some sort of history from you to better understand who you are and where this problem fits in, or even attempt to create an understanding of what created the problem. For…See More

I like the idea that if you keep on doing what you've always done you'll keep on getting what you've always got.

Emotions Are Like a River

With ACT an important part of not getting caught up in negative emotions is to take on the role of the observer. If you have difficulty understanding the concept of observing your emotions this article may help. Imagine you are standing on the banks of a fast flowing river. The size of the river and how fast it is flowing will be determined by the impact of the emotion on your life. For example, an angry person who is starting the journey into understanding the role of the observer, will find the…See More

Sadness - what to do with it

If you're sad go with the sadness. Don't fight it. Look at the sadness from the role of the observer. Where do you feel the sadness? What colour is it? Is it hard or soft? Fully explore it. Don't change it, make it go away, turn it into a positive. Don't do anything of those things. Simply observe it. Sadness is a part of life. It's not defeatist being this way, it's just far more empowering than fighting sadness.See More

Living In The Moment through ACT

If ever you find yourself consumed with thoughts or negative feelings, to the point you cannot concentrate on what you need to be doing, try this exercise. It's all about bringing yourself back to the present moment. By being present now your focus is better channelled on what actions and behaviour will bring you greater vitality rather than following the clatter of over productive thoughts or acting on overwhelming feelings.First of all notice your breathing. Feel the air going in through your…See More

About Me:
Hi, I'm a Social Worker and Teacher. I have worked in a range of settings including private practice, government departments including justice, education, child protection, hospitals and the family court. During this time I have helped support a range of people often disenfranchised from society through mental health issues, poverty, grief and a myriad of other factors that lead to a less than favourable life.

I have also experienced my share of pain throughout my life. Abuse, grief, mental health issues. What I have become passionate about is supporting those who seek a better quality of life. My current approach to support is through Acceptance Commitment Therapy or ACT.

ACT has been very powerful for me in helping me better navigate life and become increasingly accepting of life and what it offers. If you like Eckhart Tolle; Buddhism; Daoism or Taoism and other discourses that encourage us to live more fully in the present, you will also like ACT.

ACT is a recognised therapy in mainstream psychology. I find it exciting because finally Western society is starting to embrace a therapy that is not purely that of a medical model.
