If you're sad go with the sadness. Don't fight it. Look at the sadness from the role of the observer. Where do you feel the sadness? What colour is it? Is it hard or soft? Fully explore it. Don't change it, make it go away, turn it into a positive. Don't do anything of those things. Simply observe it. Sadness is a part of life. It's not defeatist being this way, it's just far more empowering than fighting sadness.
